Aircraft Mechanic Helper Qualifications

All the qualifications listed below are required for this position:

  • Minimum of one (1) year aircraft related mechanical experience or be enrolled in a continue course of study toward an Aviation Technical School certification or an Aviation trade related degree or possess an Aviation Technical School certification or an Aviation trade related degree.
  • Ability to operate power and/or hand tools and equipment such as pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, torque wrenches, micrometers, go-no-go gauges, multimeters, feeler gauges, and tension meters.
  • Ability to use mechanic’s tools with minimal supervision.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (unless higher education is required for a particular job category).
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
  • Shall be a citizen of the U.S.
  • Possess computer skills to include basic knowledge sufficient to complete internet searches and prepare/edit documents utilizing word processing or spreadsheet applications.
  • Shall be capable of performing tasks that frequently require lifting, reaching, bending, walking, pulling, sitting, standing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, and stretching for prolonged periods of time (applies to all industrial areas and aircraft touch labor categories).
  • Shall be capable of performing tasks in cramped, awkward, and strained positions and/or climbing up and down ladders, work platforms, scaffolding, and aircraft structures (applies to all industrial areas and aircraft touch labor categories).
  • Shall be capable of carrying items up to 40 pounds and on heavier items shall seek assistance of other workers or weightlifting devices (applies to all industrial areas and aircraft touch labor categories).
  • Shall be capable of using cumbersome Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) operations (applies to all industrial areas and aircraft touch labor categories).

Aircraft Mechanic Helper Tasks

The Aircraft Mechanic Helper duties shall include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist Aircraft Mechanics in servicing, repairing, and overhauling aircraft and aircraft engines.
  • Adjust and replace parts such as control cables, fuel tanks, tires, batteries, and filters.
  • Using mechanic’s tools, removes inspection plates, cowling, engine covers, floorboards, and related items to provide access for inspection and repair, and replaces items when work is completed.
  • Assist in towing and jacking aircraft.
  • Disconnect instruments, ignition systems, fuel, and oil lines.
  • Assist in dismantling, repairing, overhauling, or replacing parts and assemblies such as engines, plumbing and hydraulic systems, and aircraft structural sections.
  • Perform routine duties such as furnishing materials, tools, and supplies to mechanic; lifting and holding materials in place during operation; cleaning work areas and machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Clean aircraft, interior and exterior parts and assemblies with solvents or other cleaning solutions.
  • Inflate tires, fills gasoline tanks and oil reservoirs, and greases aircraft, using grease gun.
  • Assist in servicing and positioning support equipment as necessary.
  • Assist aircraft mechanics or technicians in servicing and preparing aircraft prior to flight.
  • Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain high state of cleanliness and utilize a clean-as-you-go process when executing maintenance duties.
  • Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walk-downs.
  • Maintain situational awareness and mitigate risks.
  • Comply with processes and procedures as per DHS/Department of Defense (DoD) documents and publications.
  • Maintain and control tools. Report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the on-site supervisor immediately upon discovery. Inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis and identify when to replace worn or broken tools.
  • Clean work area as necessary, assuring all flammable or otherwise hazardous materials are properly stored; handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Comply with safety rules and procedures and perform work in a manner that enhances the safety of procedures to the on-site supervisor.
  • Use Government computer system to access various technical references for airframe repairs and Government training requirements.
  • Provide satisfactory customer service.
