Position Description
The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work that is driven by risk-taking and passionate inquiry. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Tessitura Database Administrator is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and administering the A.R.T.’s robust customer relationship management (CRM) database. The position’s primary responsibility is to administer and manage the A.R.T.’s use of Tessitura—the premier arts and cultural enterprise application designed to fully integrate all aspects of an arts organization into one database, including: ticketing, fundraising, memberships, marketing, reporting, customer relationship management, and web functionality. This person independently executes work and facilitates the collaborative effort of these cross-functional teams across the organization. The role will be responsible for supporting, developing, implementing routine and custom functions for the databases that comprise Tessitura and other applications in the A.R.T.’s environment, while ensuring data integrity. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Tessitura and its dynamic uses by a busy arts organization, understanding not only the inner workings of Tessitura and its applications, but also how it relates to the end user, both internal and public facing.
Primary responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary source of information and advanced troubleshooter regarding Tessitura and other database schemas, structures, and objects; this position serves as the primary liaison with the Tessitura Network staff and is a member of the A.R.T.’s Tessitura Power User group.
- Manage user needs analysis, evaluation of new functionality, customization, testing, implementation, and support; ensure that upgrades and new services deliver the value users expect
- Provide technical expertise and direction in developing and supporting system level programs while optimizing the databases configuration and performance.
- Create documentation for specific systems and processes and troubleshoot advanced problems and recommend appropriate action
- Build performances and other sellable items into the database; create houses for various venues and configurations, purchase add-ons including donations and supplemental products
- Assist the Marketing and Development departments to maintain the functionality of digital products, such as website, email, and mobile app components, that interact with Tessitura.
- Independently analyze, identify, develop and communicate technical solutions to existing and new issues, including but not limited to those with reports, analytics, and design.
- Devise and/or modify procedures to solve complex technical problems
- Work with A.R.T. leadership, marketing and fundraising departments to provide strategic input and create new ways to analyze data, communicate with the public, solicit donations, and sell tickets. Collaborate with key stakeholders to translate management needs into systems requirements; scope and identify solutions that meet defined business/service objectives. Contribute to the establishment of key performance indicators and service quality measures
- Manage specialized data output requests using SQL queries/procedures, Tessitura Analytics dashboards, and customized SSRS reports where necessary
- Independently develop own project schedules and meet all project deadlines; provide regular updates and progress reports, and work with all A.R.T. departments to fulfill requests and complete assigned projects. Work at a high level within a cross-departmental team and consider the business implications of technology applications to the current and future business environment.
- Maintain updated test environment for the database to provide non-production environment for training and programming implementation purposes
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
A successful candidate will have:
- Previous working experience with other database/inventory management systems is helpful for reference.
- A minimum of three years' experience working with and advanced knowledge of Tessitura products is preferred
- Computer programming and development experience, working knowledge of and fluency is SQL is a plus.

- Interest in the theater and experience working in the non-profit arts is a plus
Certificates and Licenses
- Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Work Format Details
This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
