About the position
Kidde- Fenwal, Inc. is seeking a hardworking and hands on engineer to join the team and help provide innovation and early technology development and vetted technology options for KFI. The position will be located in Ashland, MA USA. The primary functions of the role will be to design and test new products in our fire suppression product portfolio as well as support sustaining activities for products already released.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the design and qualification of suppression products for different applications
- Translate product requirements into mechanical designs
- Perform estimates of effort and duration for tasks, ensuring design meets cost and schedule goals
- Initiate ECOs for new products, changes, and configurations
- Provide technical assistance to sales, and as needed support the creation the technical literature
- Ensure products are designed and tested to meet product cost and development cost targets along with all relevant agency and safety standards (UL, CSA, CE, FM, etc.)
- Aid manufacturing and suppliers to resolves production problems as needed
- Supports and resolves OEM application issues related to new model introductions and existing products
- Work with manufacturing, supply chain and suppliers to coordinate the preparation of product samples including component selection, physical configuration, and conformance to specification
- Test and qualify new materials and components to support cost reductions, supplier programs, and component obsolescence
- Contribute to the development of standard work to improve department efficiency and effectiveness, as well as the creation of design guidelines
- Participate in design reviews, interacts with various agencies and agency related issues pertaining to new product, cost reduction and sustaining engineering activities
- Participate in DFMEA efforts on new product development activities, supplier issues, production issues, other brainstorming sessions, and sustaining activities
- Contribute to new product development tasks, cost reduction projects and sustaining projects with significant scope and complexity in a supportive team environment
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
Preferred Qualifications (assets):
- Professional experience in Mechanical or Fire Protection Engineering
- Design experience in pressurized equipment, valves, seals, etc. in the fire protection industry
- Decision-making, organizational and time-management skills
- High degree of independent judgment and excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with heat transfer and hydraulic flow in pipes
- Working knowledge of data driven design methodologies such as Six Sigma, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), relentless root cause analysis (fault tree and fishbone diagrams), Tolerance analysis etc.
- Experience with test instruments and computer data acquisition
- Experience with model-based design tools such as flow simulation/CFD, and FEA
- Ability to create read and understand drawings and production process documentation.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing processes.
- Understanding of engineering fundamentals such as design for assembly/cost/manufacturing, geometric tolerancing, basic statistics
- Proficient in 3D solid modeling (Solid Works or equivalent)
- Proficient in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
