Senior Cartographic Experience Designer - Marketing

Overview

Bring your seasoned cartographic data visualization knowledge to help create, inspire, and influence user-centered map design at Esri and beyond.

Working closely with brand, content strategy, and a dedicated mapping visualization team, you'll play a central role in tackling our ambitious plans to bring cutting-edge geographic experiences to our global website and media touchpoints.

You'll execute technical workflows from story conception, data discovery, and management, all the way to production at scale using ArcGIS and other products. Blending your geographical expertise and imagination, you will produce stunning maps across fascinating topics including urban systems, landscape, marine, demographics/lifestyles, base maps, transportation, and Earth observations to tell engaging stories about our planet published in partnership with the world's finest publications.

Responsibilities

  • Work in partnership with Brand marketing, UX, Cartographic, and UI design teammates as well as researchers, web strategists, business stakeholders, content writers, and developers
  • Work in our suite of tools and Geodatabase implementing best practice GIS workflows including data discovery, cleaning, and implementation
  • Produce beautiful and engaging maps based on specific campaign and communication plans
  • Evaluate and propose new ideas about how to demonstrate the value of the world's most powerful mapping software to new audiences
  • Be our mapping evangelist—have an opinion, use your voice, mentor others, and share the value of geographic thinking
  • Stay up to date with the latest data and mapping technologies

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience designing and implementing maps on mobile and web
  • Expert experience in ArcGIS products, or related powerful mapping tools
  • Technical expertise: while no one is a complete expert in every tool, we expect you to have significant experience in some combination of the following. During the interview process please make it clear how you use these tools in your craft:
    • HTML / CSS
    • Geo-files, could include JSON, REST endpoint
    • JavaScript (TypeScript, React, and more)
    • SQL (PostgreSQL, SQLite, or other)
    • Any part of Esri's ArcGIS system
    • Adobe suite and design (such as Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects)
    • Cinema 4D, Unreal Engine, or other live, 3D rendering systems
    • Data Visualization: D3JS, MapBoxGLJS, Leaflet
    • Git and GitHub, and/or other collaborative version control systems
  • Bachelor's degree in geography, cartography, computer science, data visualization, or related design fields such as urban planning, architecture, and information design sciences
  • A demonstrated passion for geographic knowledge; please give examples from your past
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to make complex ideas understandable

Recommended Qualifications

  • Master's degree in geography, cartography, computer science, data visualization, or related design fields such as urban planning, architecture, and information design sciences
  • Expert knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) technology, mapping, and analysis applications
  • Familiarity with international cartographic conventions and web accessibility standards, including I10n, i18n, and translation

Samples must communicate your approach to evidence-driven problem-solving on real-world projects and demonstrate your skills in developing evidence-based insights and design solutions through a mix of low- and high-fidelity deliverables.
