Key Responsibilities:
- Abstract and code information for patients with cancer and other reportable diagnoses from designated cancer reporting facilities in the Greater Bay Area, adhering to current guidelines from registry standard-setting organizations.
- Perform duties related to the identification, coding, and linkage of reportable diagnoses, following the standards set by the California Cancer Registry and the NCI Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
The hourly compensation range for this role is $50.07 - 62.39. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate, position requirements, AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description
UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of cancer registry software and hospital electronic medical record systems.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of data at all times.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, cancer diagnosis and treatment modalities, and various medical record systems.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
- Current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association’s Council on Certification.
- Knowledge of California state cancer reporting requirements.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience abstracting cases for cancer reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience abstracting pediatric cancers.
License/Certification
- Must have current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification by the National Cancer Registrars Association’s Council on Certification
