About the Work Unit
The primary mission of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is to meet the statutory responsibility and obligation to respond to requests from Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, District Attorneys, other state agencies, and the Governor on a 24-hour, 7 day-per-week basis to assist in the detection, investigation, and enforcement of Colorado criminal laws.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit maintains four operational areas throughout the state: Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction and the Durango region. The Crime Scene Unit is responsible for the scientific collection, documentation, preservation and analysis of physical evidence collected from crime scenes.

The role of our Crime Scene Analyst is to evaluate, document and preserve a crime scene using the latest state of the art techniques, and objectively testify for the prosecution or defense for the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that we serve. In order to best serve the citizens of Colorado, we strive to build and maintain partnerships not with law enforcement agencies but also within the communities we serve.

About the Job
The Crime Scene Analyst is the Colorado Bureau of Investigation investigations technical expert in a specific forensic discipline of crime scene. This position is responsible for the identification, preservation, analysis, documentation, collection and interpretation of physical evidence collected in criminal cases for federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. The Crime Scene Analyst must perform all technical and administrative aspects of the work at the highest level of quality. Technical aspects of this position include, but are not limited to: proper documentation of a crime scene using state of the art tools to include photography and 3D scanning, proper handling and secure storage of evidence, chain of custody requirements, field safety and proper analysis of special areas of the crime scene to include bloodstain pattern interpretation, trajectory analysis and crime scene reconstruction.

Administrative aspects include, but are not limited to: evidence tracking, entering accurate and complete case documentation into the Report Management System (RMS) or other data information systems, and accurate, factual and timely report writing detailing the findings of the analysis. Additionally, this position may be called to provide expert courtroom testimony or serve in an advisory capacity. The Crime Scene Analyst serves as a liaison with all law enforcement partners of the CBI and must demonstrate the highest level of customer service, both internally and externally. This individual must demonstrate competency by successfully passing established proficiency test(s) and through continued skills-based training and professional development including certification by the International Association for Identification.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

NOTE: To be considered for this position, you must meet one of the following options for consideration.


Six years of professional complex crime scene investigation experience with a law enforcement agency.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any field and two years of professional complex crime scene investigation with a law enforcement agency.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position requires unusual shift and travel demands for investigations, training, and court testimony. Requires 24/7 availability to assist with investigations, including weekends and holidays. Work may be conducted anywhere in the State of Colorado.
  • Applicant must be willing to be fingerprinted, successfully pass a polygraph, drug screen, psychological exam, medical physical and an extensive background investigation to include criminal, financial, employment, and driving history. If you have used any illegal drugs in the past three years, or have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence, you will be disqualified and will not be hired for this position.
  • Requires a valid Colorado driver's license with no active restraints. This position requires response to criminal investigations and crime scenes anywhere within the state Colorado
  • Must be willing be support any of the CBI Investigations Unit that include but not limited to Major Crime Investigation, Cold Cases, Human Trafficking, Fugitives, Registered Sex Offenders, Drug Offenses, Cyber Crime and Identify Theft
  • Must be Colorado resident at the time of application
