POSITION PURPOSE Under general supervision, performs general law enforcement work to protect the lives, safety, health, welfare and property of the residents and visitors of the City of Sheridan by enforcing municipal, state and federal ordinances, statues and laws. Exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and often works under stressful, high-risk conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 1. Patrols assigned area to deter illegal activities and identify criminal activity in order to preserve the safety and security of individuals, buildings and neighborhoods.

2. Responds to dispatch calls and investigates citizen complains and reports of breaches of the peace including crimes in progress, crimes discovered after the fact, disturbances, and accidents. Performs extra patrol watches in order to maintain high visibility.

3. Performs investigations of crimes by: interviewing witnesses, complainants and victims to obtain facts and circumstances of incidents; gathering physical evidence and photographing crime scenes to ensure the proper preservation and collection of evidence for use in court proceedings; and conducting follow-up investigations as needed to obtain additional case information.

4. Prepares, processes and transmits reports including: incident reports, non-criminal reports; booking reports; accident reports; witness statements; and traffic citations.

5. Apprehends, arrests and detains criminal suspects and law violators to ensure public safety and maintain order. Takes suspects into custody by the reading of rights, booking and transport of individuals to holding and jailing facilities.

6. Prepares citations and summonses necessary to charge individuals with violations of ordinances, statutes, and laws including petty, misdemeanor and felonious offenses. Serves warrants and subpoenas.

7. Acts as first responder to emergencies rendering medical/first aid/CPR and requesting medical attention when necessary. Responds to emergency calls involving robberies, burglaries, kidnappings, assaults, and homicides.

8. Performs traffic surveillance and operates traffic radar/lasers to enforce traffic ordinances and statutes. Investigates traffic accidents and assists motorists in various situations. Directs traffic as needed to ensure safe operations.

9. Serves as a witness by testifying in court and providing information and evidence during court proceedings.

10. Responds to inquiries and provides information to citizens and visitors of the City of Sheridan including giving of directions, requesting vehicular roadside assistance, and locating lost children.

11. Attends periodic training sessions and seminars involving physical training, classroom instruction, field exercises, simulation exercises, investigative methods, rescue methods, and instruction in the use of equipment including: firearms; vehicles; intoxilyzers; tazers and other equipment.

12. Participates in community-oriented police functions to educate and promote community relations.

OTHER DUTIES
1. Assists with other departments and outside agencies as needed.

2. Provides security at events as needed.

3. Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Solid knowledge of approved principles and practices as well as laws and ordinances governing police work.

Solid knowledge of laws and departmental procedures surrounding the handling of suspects, crime scene control and the presentation of evidence in court.

Solid ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Solid ability to apply common sense understanding during normal and stressful conditions.

Solid ability to compile and analyze data and to prepare a variety of reports.

Solid ability to communicate clearly and distinctly face-to-face as well as over the radio in normal and adverse conditions.

Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Solid driving skills with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Solid written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of personnel.

Basic knowledge of computers, office equipment and software applications.

Education

High School diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum Experience

Previous military, law enforcement experience preferred

Colorado POST certified Police Officer by date of hire
CPR/First Aid Certification

On the Job Training

Minimum 2 years – less than 5 years.

Equipment Utilized
Equipment with multiple logic functions and capabilities requiring specialized training.

Police car, police radio, baton, handcuffs, Lidar, radar, PBT, Intoxilyzer, fingerprint scanner
(Livescan), firearms and other weapons, first aid equipment, personal computer including word processing software and other assorted law enforcement equipment.

SCOPE OF AUTHORITY Defined procedures cover most duties. Generally, expected to deal with different and specialized situations. Work is typically reviewed at completion. Plans daily work activities and prioritize tasks.

COMMUNICATION Internal

Daily interaction in person, by phone, by email and by mail with Law Enforcement personnel and Administration personnel to ask and answer questions, provide information, and provide testimony.

Daily interaction by radio, by phone, by email, by facsimile, and in person with Dispatch personnel to exchange information.

Monthly interaction in person with City Council members to exchange information and discuss issues.

External
Daily interaction in person, by phone, by email and by mail with outside Law Enforcement personnel (Fire and Paramedic) and general public to enforce laws, answer questions, obtain information and promote positive image and build rapport.

SUPERVISORY Responsible for assigning and scheduling work, training, appraising performance,
RESPONSIBILITY promotions/transfers, salary recommendations, interviewing and hiring, disciplinary discussions and terminations.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is typically performed indoors and outdoors. Employees are subject to traffic hazards while patrolling and responding to emergencies in all traffic and weather conditions. Occasionally the employee will deal with irate, abusive and disorderly people; deal with the public in situations involving possible severe physical and personal trauma; have exposure to potentially dangerous people, animals and objects; and have exposure to outdoor weather conditions and moderate noise levels. Moderate physical activity required by handling objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently.

Is frequently required to sit, stand and walk. Is occasionally required to use hand and finger dexterity to handle or feel objects, tools, or equipment; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; utilize arm and hand steadiness and manual dexterity to use weapons necessary to prevent injury or to protect self and others; maintain stamina and tolerance enough to remain physically and mentally alert for short bursts of extremely intense work. The employee must possess clear vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more. Must be able to distinguish colors, have the ability to observe and area that can be seen up or down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point. Must have three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and special relationships. Must have ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.

Pay: $73,000.00 - $109,559.00 per year
