Job Summary

We are looking for a database administrator (DBA) to assist with the management of BYU's Oracle databases. In this position, you will contribute to the strategic direction of the data team and provide proactive support. Additional duties include account management, backup/restore/recovery, monitoring, capacity planning, configuration, upgrading/patching, documentation, user support, and performance tuning.

  • Independently analyze database problems and provide problem resolution.
  • Assist with upgrading and patching, backup and restore, monitoring, and system configuration.
Assist with account management, performance tuning, design review, user support.

Education and Experience:

This position provides an opportunity for people of varying levels of skill. If you have a lot of education, experience, and skill, we'll compensate you accordingly. If you are early in your career, this could be a great opportunity for you, too. Different levels of pay are assigned by the hiring department depending on experience/education/skills and business needs.

Professional (Level 54T): Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and related experience; 1-2 industry certifications preferred related to tools used in the job ($83,000 to $107,500 approximate starting salary range)

Senior Professional (Level 55T): Bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) plus 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and related experience; 1-2 industry certifications preferred related to tools used in the job ($96,500 to $125,000 approximate starting salary range)

Enterprise Subject Matter Expert (Level 56T): Bachelor's degree (master's degree preferred) plus 10 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and related experience; 1-2 industry certifications preferred related to tools used in the job ($112,000 to $145,000 approximate starting salary range)


Skills, abilities, or knowledge:

You are not required to have experience in all areas listed below. What you don't know we can teach you. We are seeking the most qualified candidates; the more you have, the more likely you are to be selected. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skills.

  • Knowledge of database structures, theories, principles, and practices including table normalization and the way Oracle enforces data integrity
  • Knowledge of SQL, stored procedures, functions, views, and triggers
  • Ability to identify and resolve database performance issues, such as slow queries, inefficient indexing, or resource contention
  • Ability to use log files, related trace files, and other methods for troubleshooting and optimization
  • Knowledge of Oracle security management
  • Ability to configure network components to ensure database access
  • Ability to write Linux shell scripts to automate tasks
  • Effective technical communication with infrastructure teams, developers, and less-technical users
  • Experience with cloud database technologies and VMs is helpful
  • Knowledge of additional database management systems is preferred
