GENERAL DESCRIPTION


Temporary, full-time position for a current law student primarily conducting research and writing on a variety of employment law issues, human resources, and legal ethics. Position ends by 8/31/2024.

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG), a dynamic state agency with over 4000 employees throughout the State of Texas, is seeking a qualified individual with an interest in employment law to serve as a temporary Law Clerk for the Human Resources Division. Work involves examining and preparing legal documents, conducting legal research, providing assistance to attorneys and other division staff, and making recommendations to attorneys. ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts legal research on employment law and legal ethics, including Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Fair
  • Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as amended, and the Texas Whistleblower Act
  • Prepares and edits research memoranda, legal documents, policies, and other Human Resources (HR) related documents
  • Assists with subpoenas and unemployment benefits
  • Performs related work as assigned
  • Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity
Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Enrolled in an accredited law school
  • Must have already submitted an application for the agency’s Summer Law Clerk Program
  • Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval
  • Skill in using Microsoft Office Tools such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment
  • Ability to work in person at assigned OAG work location, perform all assigned tasks at designated OAG work space within OAG work location, and perform in-person work with coworkers (e.g., collaborating, training, mentoring) for the entirety of every work week (unless on approved leave)
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA
  • Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs.
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 5%

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in pursuing a career in employment law or human resources
  • General knowledge of employment law (e.g., Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 1964, Family and Medical Leave Act)
  • General knowledge of Office of the Attorney General
  • Skill in public speaking
  • Enthusiasm, self-awareness, and engaging personality
  • Ability to work until 8/31/2024
  • Ability to begin employment on or before 6/1/2024
