Space Lab is currently looking for a Mechanical Engineer Level II to support research and development of advanced technology for human space exploration and space science. This position specifically involves development of the Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora Beta (LEAF β) payload for operations on the Lunar surface, which is crew deployed during the NASA Artemis III mission (may be manifested on a later mission). This position reports to the LEAF β Principal Engineer. The expected start date for this position is June 3, 2024.

Responsibilities:

The Mechanical Engineer II (ME II) supports the mechanical engineering of the LEAF β project, which includes the 1) structure (STR) system, 2) instrumentation suite, 3) thermal (THM) system, and 4) solar alignment system (SOL). The ME II assists with the 3D-CAD designs and analyses, such as linear and non-linear static load analyses, deployment, atmosphere leak, vibration, acceleration, shock, fluid flow, thermal, and human-factors analyses. The ME II supports the performance analyses led by the system engineers to include mass budget, atmosphere leak rate, heat rejection, and crew interface/operations. The ME II supports the development of procedures, such as assembly, integration, and acceptance testing. The ME II also supports development of relevant ground support equipment.

Overall Responsibilities:
-Analytical and simulation-based analyses
-Spacecraft structural design and analyses
-Load analyses (Launch, EVA Lift/Carry, etc.)
-Mechanism Design
-Hands-on prototype development to include the use of drill press, power tools, hand tools, etc.
-Project/sub-system leadership
-Space flight hardware development
-Technical writing for reports, grants, publications
-Technical presentations to customers and the public

Requirements:
This position requires extensive knowledge of fundamental mechanical engineering concepts to include structural design and analysis, fluid flow analysis and simulation, and thermal system analysis and simulation. Knowledge and experience with SolidWorks, COMSOL, ANSYS, or equivalent software tools are required. Experience with MATLAB is required. Experience with the use of spaceflight standards is required. Minimal travel for conferences, customer presentations, payload integration/testing, and rocket launches is required approximately 4× per year. The position is a full-time exempt position of 40 hrs/week, where the duties require minimal supervision. Overtime work above the 40 hrs/week is expected only to meet deadlines.

Education and Experience Requirements:
M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or B.S. +4 years experience

Salary:
$80,000.00 to $100,000.00 /year
