Employment Information

Helix Steel is currently seeking mid-career candidates for a Manufacturing/Quality Engineer to be based at its facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This role reports to the COO.

Primary Function

Responsible for driving continuous improvement in our manufacturing processes, including hands-on machine development and optimization.

Skills

  • Analytical – need to be able to identify areas of low efficiency and work to provide improvements.
  • Lean Manufacturing – must be able to identify and eliminate waste within the system.
  • QA and QC Skills – such as ISO 9000, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control is preferred.
  • Communication – will work with manufacturing employees at all levels and need to be able to effectively explain the relevant points of equipment to each.
  • Technical – must be able to work with different technology to provide a solution that produces the required result in the most efficient way possible.
  • Commercial Awareness – must always keep the “bigger picture” in mind when considering each step of the manufacturing process.
  • Problem Solving – must take a concept of a process and establish the equipment needed to make it happen.
  • Organizational Abilities – should be able to prioritize tasks, set schedules and work between different projects to achieve overall business goals.

Essential Duties

  • Improve all aspects of manufacturing efficiency: workflow, space requirements, equipment layout, and machine capability.
  • Establish manufacturing standards; create and maintain documentation for tools and processes.
  • Support manufacturing decision-making by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements; prepare product and process reports.
  • Remain current in production best practices, tools, and techniques and implement them in a reasonable and responsible manner.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor the Production team.
  • This role requires significant travel, up to 50%.

Desired Experience

  • Five to ten years of experience as a process/manufacturing engineer in a small company environment.
  • Significant experience in lean manufacturing as well as demonstrated capability in ISO9000, Six Sigma, or similar QC/QA methodologies. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt preferred.
  • Experience with PLC-based equipment and wire drawing and/or polymer extrusion
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role with a strong ability to communicate well at all levels, written and oral, effective in a team as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated hands-on ability in machine development, with a focus on process capability and reliability.
  • Advanced ability to multitask and prioritize work in a rapidly shifting environment with excellent time management skills.
  • Other attributes: creative problem solving, action- and detail-oriented, drive for success.
