Employment Information

Under the general direction of a Supervising Special Investigator I, the Investigator will conduct independent field investigations; work as part of a team; or act as a lead on other investigators when assigned. As a Peace Officer under the California Penal Code, Section 830.3(d), detect and/or verify and enforce suspected violations of the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) rules, regulations, and laws, as well as other related laws.
Applicants must have successfully completed a P.O.S.T. Peace Officer Basic Training Academy or Specialized Investigators’ Basic Academy. The applicant’s status with P.O.S.T. must be current.

Applicants must meet California Peace Officer hiring, physical, psychological, and background standards before a hire can be made.

Working Conditions

  • The position works primarily at the Santa Anita Park (Arcadia - Los Angeles County) in a typical racetrack environment.
  • The position is required to work periodically at other California racetracks, fairs, and training facilities.
  • Lodging and per diem is provided by the department.
  • The position is required to work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • The position is required to travel frequently in Southern California and occasionally throughout the State.
  • Position is not eligible for telework.

In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, the employee shall meet the following minimum standards:
  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal records.
  • Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. For purposes of this section a medical examination, including psychological screen, shall be required prior to appointment.
