Teach safe, educational, and motivating group exercise classes.
II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Provides appropriate information and direction for members to adequately fulfill their goals in health and wellness.
Provides professional instruction to all members in all group exercise class environments in which one has been trained (aerobic, aquatic, Spinning, etc.).
Leads, educates, and motivates participants through demonstration, verbal communication, and other ways which provide positive reinforcement.
Assists members in developing a healthy exercise program by providing ongoing observation and interpersonal feedback during classes.
Ensures that all classes are scientifically based, professionally organized and effectively presented.
Provides ongoing education in exercise principles, industry guidelines and prevention of injury to members.
Announces what the class is and introduces oneself at the start of each class.
Emphasizes the student’s responsibility to work at his or her own level and assists them in determining appropriate exercise heart rates.
Observes class participants and ask how they are feeling. Reminds them to stay hydrated when exercising, even in the pool.
Teaches the class format as listed in the Group Exercise schedule. The Fitness Director must approve changes in class format.
III OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Exhibits strong customer service skills during all customer interactions.
Makes sure all equipment is put away after class. If anything is missing or not working properly, reports it to the Group Exercise Manager.
Assures proper usage of stereo, microphone and all exercise equipment that pertains to group exercise. This includes using a windscreen and microphone belt when teaching a class.
Records class attendance.
Completes time sheets.
Provides appropriate coverage when unable to teach a class that oneself is scheduled to teach. See Group Exercise Sub Policy.
Attends all mandatory staff meetings, training seminars and other workshops.
Changes music and works on new routines on a regular basis to keep classes exciting.
IV. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.
V. QUALIFICATIONS
A nationally recognized certification, such as AFAA or ACE, is required.
At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes to individuals of varying abilities is preferred.
Must maintain a nationally recognized certification as well as any other necessary certifications, including CPR.
Attends continuing education workshops/conventions on a regular basis. Stays current with fitness information and expands knowledge as certifications are kept up to date.

Records accurately all classes taught, and hours worked.
VIII. PHYSICAL RESPONSIBILITY

While performing the duties of this job the individual is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is often required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and have the physical skills to perform CPR. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear the human voice over the telephone and from 20 feet away.
The employee may be required to assist staff and members with emergency response and exit.
The employee will frequently be required to demonstrate exercises as they relate to group exercise classes.
VIIII. WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
The employee may be required to work early mornings, evenings and/or weekends to ensure the center’s needs are being met. This may include helping to sub for other instructors as needed.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports directly to the Fitness Director.
