Employment Information

The role of the Fitness Specialist is to assist and inspire members as they participate in fitness and wellness activities, particularly through participation in effective new member on-boarding and participation in personal training, small-group personal training and/or group exercise activities.

Essential Functions

  • Promotes healthy living for members, personal training clients and staff, group exercise, special events, and fundraisers, while working in a results-driven, team atmosphere.
  • Supports the Director of Fitness in marketing, staffing, training and continued development of personal training and fitness programs for both youth and adults.
  • Develops safe and effective fitness and personalized training programs for clients including cardiovascular, strength training, and flexibility components, based on client's goals and motivations, and works with other trainers to ensure that all personal training staff have access to continuing education to offer same
  • Contacts and sets up initial meetings with prospective clients, promoting fitness and personal training, while also providing information on general YMCA programs as needed.
  • Observes members and clients in exercising and demonstrates correct techniques to minimize injury and improve fitness, monitors clients' progress and adapts programs as needed.
  • Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations for fitness activities, and the proper use of exercise equipment. Models this behavior and encourages all trainers and fitness staff to do same.
  • Oversees fitness floor while engaging with members, staff and maintaining a clean workout facility including but not limited to equipment, flooring, and towels.
  • Gives clients information or resources about nutrition, weight control, and related lifestyle issues.
  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group exercise classes to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. Coordinates wellness-related group activities including but not limited to Les Mills Launches, Yoga Under the Stars, and Spin-a-Rama.
  • Structure and create educational materials for fitness staff meetings.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members and staff
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members and staff; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Create data reports and tracking of trends to monitor and improve fitness departments.


Qualifications

  • Requires HS diploma or equivalent
  • Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, and current nationally recognized certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in personal training or group fitness instruction.
  • At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
  • Must hold a current YMCA Personal Trainer, YMCA Foundations of Strength Training certification and/or a current nationally recognized personal training certification (ex. ACSM, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, etc.) upon hire.
  • Must be able to articulate and communicate effectively with both members and staff team.
  • Must have current knowledge of strength, cardiovascular, flexibility and functional-training guidelines and ability to modify exercises for special populations when needed.

Full-time. Hourly range $19-21. Flexible hours and shifts available to include mornings, afternoons, evenings and/or weekends. Free YMCA membership for employee and family. Pre-employment drug screen and clear background check required.
