Pay Range

$89,670 - $111,324 Annually for the G04.2 level

$107,550 - $133,524 Annually for the G04.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Employee Communications Specialist to support internal communications and employee engagement for LLNL’s Engineering Directorate. Engineering is a multidisciplinary organization that performs wide-ranging research, engineering, and manufacturing in support of the Laboratory’s missions. Representing the largest portion of the Laboratory’s workforce, the Engineering Directorate comprises roughly 2,900 employees who are world-renowned for their scientific, technical, and research achievements. Our workforce is highly diverse, comprising employees with widely different roles, career stages, and needs; your role will be to support robust, consistent, engaging communications with all employees across a variety of platforms.

You will be working across a variety of communication vehicles (such as email newsletter, internal website, event flyers/posters, brochures, and other marketing materials), and for a wide range of audiences (from student interns to prospective hires to senior researchers). Working with Engineering’s communications manager and team of writers/designers, you’ll assist with the development, execution, and measurement of internal communication activities and tools designed to foster and uphold a culture of transparency, trust, and engagement. This position is in the Technical Information Department and fully supports the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will

Develop original content, provide writing and editing services, and work with both comms and workforce teams on the production of templates, documents, digital tools, and graphics to support employee communication, events, and recruitment/marketing efforts.
Perform regular web content updates using basic HTML and/or content management systems such as Drupal and WordPress, and work with designers to plan or integrate new content.
Provide writing and editing services for large and/or complex digital or print projects.
Serve as a final quality check with designers, web developers, or multimedia professionals to ensure all production assignments meet determined goals and requirements.
Demonstrate interpersonal skills in working with LLNL staff members of all levels to support the Laboratory and its communications needs.
Collaborate with subject matter experts, various reviewers, and Office of Classification and Export Control to evaluate and determine the classification level of publications.
Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, at the .3 level

Execute and enhance existing internal communication vehicles and make recommendations for new programs, tactics, and tools.
Develop and implement project plans and schedules for moderately complex projects or campaigns; make and fulfill commitments on cost, schedule, and quality for communication products.
Coordinate production jobs of varying complexity, often with a publication team of editors, designers, animators, web developers, and/or vendors.
Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism, media relations, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in communications.
Experience as a writer/editor, planning, developing, and writing content effectively across various types of communication platforms, including web, digital, and print; knowledge of and experience using editorial style conventions as well as communication practices and standards.
Familiarity with design principles, data visualization, and visual communication techniques.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with a drive for quality control and excellence.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including tact and diplomacy to effectively interact with all levels in Engineering; ability to work both independently and within a team environment to meet tight deadlines while managing competing priorities.
Self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight, shifting schedules, including effective interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and web content management systems (CMS), including Drupal or WordPress; experience or familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud software suite and Atlassian suite.

In addition, at the .3 level

Expertise in the theory and techniques of high-quality communication for both printed and web-based publications.
Significant writing and editing experience in a wide variety of scientific areas or technical areas.
Project management experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups in order to translate and develop communication materials that are easily understood by business-oriented customers including establishing team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
Experience collaborating with senior managers, clients, team members, peers, and stakeholders to meet organizational/ programmatic objectives.

Qualifications We Desire

Thorough understanding of LLNL’s primary mission of ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the nuclear stockpile.
Experience in marketing/branding and/or social media.
Experience developing communications for HR, recruiting, or employee/workforce relations.
Experience working with graphic designers and/or applying design principles to visualize content for different campaigns, platforms, and audiences.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
