Purpose of the Position

The Database Systems Administrator utilizes extensive hands-on experience in designing, building, and supporting database technologies both On Premise System and Cloud. This role is responsible for monitoring, analysis, reporting of database technologies that can help organization plan expansion, scalability, and upgrades. This role will help Global IT team with vendors, contract, and cost management as it relates to database technologies.

Although the location of the position is in Jessup, MD or Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.


Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Review current database architecture design and documentation.
  • Support and maintain existing database architecture to the best practices and compliance requirements.
  • Develop plans for upgrades, expansions, and improvement of the existing database architecture.
  • Design and implement highly available and redundant database architecture.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to databases across platforms as it relates to applications and services.
  • Work with local/remote teams to support the delivery, deployment, and operation of database technologies.
  • Proactive development of monitoring solutions for database technologies.
  • Ensures that security standards, practices, and policies are incorporated into all database architecture.
  • Design and develop automation to reduce failures, manual tasks and therefore improving overall service performance, stability, and availability.
  • Develop reports and dashboards that can help with cost management of database cloud services and budgets.
  • Maintain optimal performance of business-critical applications, including Dynamics D365.
  • Handle security access, authentication and authorization of users accessing various database systems.
  • Build fail-proof data pipelines (ETL) to move data between different systems while maintaining integrity using Azure tools and cloud-based ETL development processes.
  • Maintain performance and scale of database with best practice-based maintenance routines and monitoring.

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

U.S. Citizen

  • Ability to work on ITAR-related projects.

Experience:

  • 1-3 years experience of strong enterprise-level database administration and engineering
  • Proven work experience designing, deploying, and managing enterprise-class cloud database systems (Azure/AWS/Google etc.)
  • Experience managing database administrators working on various on-premises and cloud-based systems.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or equivalent fields in IT or equivalent experience.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • 1-3 years technical experience configuring Microsoft SQL database technologies.
  • Experience with monitoring solutions for databases.
  • Experience with database backup technologies.
  • Experience with Clustering, Mirroring, Replication, Scripting, Stored Procedure, Functions, Performance Tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Azure data factory, Azure SQL, Databricks and Data lake
  • Experience with Power Bi, SSRS
  • Experience with cloud-based database technologies.
  • Familiarity with SAAS based system design, development, and deployment.
  • Consultative skills, including the ability to understand business requirements, identify risks and make recommendations for best practice design.
  • The ability to document and conduct knowledge transfer to internal staff.
  • Solid project management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Experience with standard change management and configuration policies.
