The Department of Workforce Development (DWD), Division of Administrative Services (ASD), Bureau of Information Technology Services is currently recruiting for a Database Specialist.

Position Summary

  • Create and maintain databases, ensure they are efficient, organized and optimized.
  • Collaborate with others to design/model and implement new schemas, tables, procedures, and triggers.
  • Ensure DWD data security and policy is followed.
  • Troubleshoot errors and optimize data system performance.

Salary Information


Starting wage is between $90,000 – $98,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience, plus excellent benefits. For more benefits information, view our benefits overview.

Pay will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan in effect at the time of appointment. Starting pay may vary for current state employees.

Job Details


This position is on-call 24/7 for issues that may arise. Calls are generally infrequent and are currently about one per month.

This position may be allowed to work remotely in Wisconsin most of the time but will need to report in person to their assigned office location in Madison when required, sometimes on short notice. High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

A 12-month probationary period will be required. The classification title for this position is IS Data Services Specialist (schedule 07, range 33). This position is not represented in a collective bargaining unit and is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Finalists for this position may be required to allow DWD to conduct a background check or other checks to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a US citizen or national or a lawful permanent resident) at the time of appointment. DWD does not sponsor visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. This is not a contract position. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Qualifications


It is very important that you specify your experience for the qualifications that are marked with asterisks (*) in your letter and resume as these qualifications will be evaluated in the first step of the selection process. Additional qualifications may be evaluated in subsequent steps.

You need to have all of the following:

    • Expert level Oracle and/or Db2 database administration (e.g. design, implementation, maintenance, security, etc.)
    • Expert level experience tuning database and SQL queries
    • Expert level experience troubleshooting and resolving database-related application issues
  • Experience developing and implementing database security standards
  • Experience leading others (i.e., training, leading teams, projects, or workgroups, etc.)

Any of the following would be nice to have:

    • Microsoft SQL Database administration.
    • Experience in cloud technology (AWS, GKE, Spanner, Cloud SQL, BigQuery, etc.)
    • Experience doing migration from one database to another (i.e., Db2 to Cloud)
