We're looking for an outstanding Database Administrator to join a top-notch group supporting world class science and technology at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Zurka Interactive is expanding our team at NRL in Washington, D.C. You will be part of a team managing IT services on unclassified and classified networks for 5,000 users. You'll be working with a variety of technologies in a heterogeneous computing environment. This is a hybrid role with 2 days each week on site at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC.

NRL is an environment in which members of the team have a great deal of autonomy and numerous opportunities to grow their technical knowledge. Your work will involve responsibility for systems architecture, engineering, and administration for a complex systems environment on classified and unclassified networks. The environment will continue to grow and evolve providing challenges and opportunities for professional growth and collaboration. In the past we've supported researchers doing work on nanoscience, autonomous systems and experiments deployed on the International Space Station.

We're looking for someone with 8+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated skills in the following areas:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience as DBA in Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Minimum 8 years of in-depth knowledge and experience in database theory and design.
  • Minimum 8 years of in-depth experience in planning, implementing, administering and programming Microsoft SQL Server (versions 2008 R2, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019)
  • Familiarity with NoSQL databases, particularly MongoDB, including installation, configuration, and administration. Experience with database security, backup and recovery, and high availability solutions
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB database design, indexing, sharding, and replication.
  • Experience with MongoDB security mechanisms, backup, and recovery procedures.
  • Familiarity with Oracle and MySQL databases, including installation, configuration, hardening and administration.
  • Hands-on experience with Oracle and MySQL database design, indexing, and replication.
  • Experience with Oracle and MySQL security mechanisms, backup, and recovery procedures.
  • Experience with SAP/Sybase ASE and/or PostgreSQL is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities and duties for this position will include the following:

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available and scalable SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle databases.
  • Perform regular database monitoring, tuning, and optimization to ensure optimal performance and maximum uptime.
  • Manage database security including access controls, permissions, and data encryption.
  • Plan and implement database backups, disaster recovery, and high availability solutions.
  • Troubleshoot database-related issues, including performance bottlenecks, connectivity problems, and data integrity issues.
  • Collaborate with development teams to optimize database schema, queries, and stored procedures for performance and scalability.
  • Work with COTS application owners to deploy required database components for applications in compliance with relevant STIGs (including Application Security & Development STIG where required).
  • Support transfer of database content between production/development environments and environments that do not share security contexts.
  • Develop and maintain documentation related to database configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and technologies related to database administration.
  • May require after hours support for critical database issues.

Strong preference will be given to candidates who meet DoD 8570 requirements for an IAT III level position, including an active CASP certification or equivalent.

U.S. Citizenship and a DoD Top Secret Security Clearance is required.
