This Supervisory Criminal Investigator position is with the Investigative Operations Division (IOD) National Security Group of the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in Washington D.C.

In this position, you will conduct complex and sensitive criminal, civil, and administrative investigations into misconduct allegations against CBP employees and contractors. You will be responsible for the administration, management, and oversight of investigative activities and special operations assigned to a field office or area of responsibility.

As a Supervisory Criminal Investigator, your duties include but are not limited to:

  • Employing all of CBP's authorities and capabilities to support investigations of crime, counterterrorism, and counterintelligence activities.
  • Conducting criminal investigations involving CBP employees and related entities suspected of crimes affecting the business of CBP and the administration of customs and immigration laws.
  • Investigating individuals, businesses, employees, and criminal organizations that represent a significant threat to U.S. national security through the corruption, or attempted corruption of CBP personnel and/or programs.

Salary and Benefits

This position starts at a salary of $139,395 (GS-14, Step 1) to $181,216 (GS-14, Step 10). You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Planning and conducting counterintelligence, counterterrorism, and/or national security investigations and operations.
  • Preparing detailed reports of investigations; providing concise and detailed briefings to senior management and executives regarding complex and high visibility long term investigations; and maintaining coordination and liaison with members of law enforcement and/or the intelligence community.
  • Preparing and executing search, seizure, and arrest warrants, subpoenas, electronic surveillance orders, and similar law enforcement and intelligence community activities.
  • Developing facts and evidence gathered during interviews, record reviews, search warrants, and possessing the ability to interpret and apply U.S. code pertaining to national security and criminal violations.

Mandatory Prerequisite for Secondary Administrative LEO Retirement Covered Position: This position has been identified as administrative, that is, an executive, managerial, technical, semiprofessional, or professional position for which experience in a primary/rigorous law enforcement or firefighting position, or equivalent experience outside of the federal government is a mandatory prerequisite as defined by 5 CFR 831.902 (CSRS) and 5 CFR 842.802 (FERS). Note: if you currently serve in a permanent Secondary LEO Retirement covered position, you are exempt from this mandatory prerequisite.

Criminal Investigator Training Program: Criminal Investigators must complete an initial course of basic training, specifically the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia. Alternately, they may complete an OPR approved equivalent course of instruction and the OPR Special Agent Training Program at the Customs and Border Protection Advanced Training Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Both basic and advanced training programs are designed to prepare law enforcement personnel with the skills, aptitudes, and competencies required to serve as a Criminal Investigator.
