SALARY IS BASED ON YEARS OF CERTIFICATION

A Police Officer, keeps the public safe by investigating and preventing crimes. Their main duties include processing and making criminal arrests, writing detailed reports about various cases and taking witness statements after crimes are committed. Maintain a constant presence in the community through regular patrols to deter crime and provide quick help when needed. Secure crime scenes and protect evidence from tampering or loss. Attend public events as security to help ensure peaceful attendance. Help identify potential crime spots and activities which may result in criminal acts. Remain vigilant regarding potential hazards or problems which could harm the public. Issue citations for traffic and similar violations. Apprehend those suspected of committing crimes. Write daily reports of activities.

Attend and participate in meetings, presentations, and classes pertinent to police programs, coordinate creation of material for presentations; meet with community groups to assess concerns. Use departmental computer equipment to input and review records and data, write reports and other miscellaneous tasks. Perform other duties as assigned.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Analyze situations quickly and objectively, and determine and take emergency action. Understand, interpret and apply relevant Federal and State statutes, local ordinances, and Police Department and city rules and policies. Maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties. Learn the operation of standard equipment and facilities required in the performance of assigned tasks, including standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system. Meet the physical requirements established by the department. Use, care for and qualify with firearms. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including a variety of city and other government officials, community groups, and the general public.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience
One year of experience as a Police Recruit.
Training
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade and successful completion of the Jackson Police Academy.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid drivers license. Police Minimum Standards Certification.
