Grand Haven Department of Public Safety is seeking Police Recruit Candidates to attend the Fall 2024 Police Academy at Grand Valley State University or other Michigan Police Academies. This is a paid sponsorship with academy tuition provided by the department and an hourly pay rate of $25.43/hr while attending the academy.

Upon successful completion of the police academy and licensing through MCOLES, the recruit will be reclassified to a Public Safety Officer. Sponsored police recruits will be paid an hourly wage and receive benefits while attending the academy.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services training is required following police academy graduation and will be provided by the department.

• Apply for the Police Officer / Paid Academy position
• Complete an interview with the Director of Public Safety or Director’s designee
• Complete MCOLES reading and writing / pre-enrollment physical fitness test
• Pass a comprehensive background investigation
• Pass a drug screen and psychological evaluation
• Participate and successfully complete an MCOLES-accredited academy approved by the

Director of Public Safety

• Comply with all policies, rules, and regulations of the City of Grand Haven, Department of Public Safety, academic institution, and the police academy
