Position Description: The Visiting Nurse Association is currently seeking a detail oriented, self-motivated registered nurse who wants to make a difference in the lives of students, working only three days per week.
This employee will be responsible for carrying out the School Health Program following the VNHS program guidelines and in accordance with the recommended state school health policies and procedures. The nurse will implement the school health program in the assigned schools in collaboration with the school administrator and under the Clinical Manager of the School Health Program of VNHS.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Confer with the administrator of each assigned school and the Clinical Manager in the planning, implementing, and evaluating of the health program.
Evaluate school health policies/practices and provide guidance re: first aid/CPR and illness care, medication administration and blood borne pathogen compliance.
Plan/manage the required health screening programs and perform rescreens of abnormal health screenings, nursing assessments and intervention to include the necessary referral and follow-up in writing, by phone or per home visit.
Maintain a preventative health program through annual review and update of immunization records and early identification and control of communicable conditions.
Observe and evaluate the school and its surroundings, reporting potential problems as they arise concerning a safe and healthy environment.
Prepare reports as required to include immunization summaries, statistical reports, evaluations and other.
Identify students with special health needs in the educational setting through development of student health needs index and emergency action plans.
Serve as health liaison from the school to the home, to health care providers and to community resources.
Maintain individual permanent student health records, documenting all pertinent health information including immunizations and results of all health screenings.
Provide counseling, guidance and teaching to students, school personnel, and parents regarding matters relating to their health.
Serve as a consultant to the classroom teacher and guest lecturer on topics related to health education.
Assist with in-service programs for school personnel relating to recognition of illness, first aid, and emergency care, infection and blood-borne pathogen exposure control and other health related issues.
Serve as a member of the multi-disciplinary team for students with special health needs when requested.
Provide treatment requiring the expertise of the nurse for injured and ill students.
Complies with all federal, state and local laws and regulations as appropriate for the position, complies with all policies and procedures of the agency, including those specified in the employee handbook.
Provide orientation and direction to the paraprofessionals and volunteers assisting with screenings and other health related matters.
Contributes to employee satisfaction through positive interactions and professionalism.
Functions independently with the minimal supervision.
Promotes a positive working environment for program staff and agency as a whole.
