Registered Nurse (Per Diem)

SUMMARY: The Operating Room Registered Nurse and PACU Registered Nurse (Per Diem)

Responsible for the planning, administration, orchestration and execution of all aspects of the operating room circulating duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITY:

  • OPERATING ROOM
  • perform narcotic count a.m. with anesthesia
  • place all necessary lens orders
  • check all surgical charts one week prior to surgery with doctor
  • morning of surgery prepare and label BSS + bottles and epi solution for number of cases scheduled
  • draw up necessary medications for the day
  • assist in phaco set up
  • turn the room over in between cases
  • apply wrist restraints
  • prep patients as needed
  • ensure time out has been performed
  • fill out intra-operative forms
  • remain in OR during surgical procedures
  • make patient lens card, clip to front patients chart
  • make Alcon ID for lens and file in mail-in envelope
  • Sterilize instruments between cases
  • assist in patient transport to and from OR 1, OR 2 and PACU
  • assist anesthesia as needed
  • mark any equipment needed for the following weeks cases on order log
  • perform narcotic count with anesthesia p.m. of surgery with anesthesia

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITY:

PACU

  • admit patients to PACU and fill out necessary admission documentation
  • run EKG strip, perform vitals and assessment
  • triage flow of patients from OR 1, OR 2 and PACU
  • start patient IV and prep for surgery
  • ensure patient has received adequate drops prior to transport to OR 1, eye is marked, and patient has bouffant cap and shoe covers and a blanket.
  • assist in patient transport to and from OR 1, OR 2 and PACU
  • recover patients in PACU
  • make sure every patient gets discharge medications
  • discharge patients with responsible adult and/or PACU tech
  • give caregiver copy of discharge instructions
  • mark any equipment needed for the following weeks cases on order log
  • sit down and review all charts prior to leaving

BEHAVIORAL STANDARDS:

  • Maintain and role model a positive, friendly, approachable disposition
  • Consistent, timely and clear confrontation of issues using correct use of confrontational skills, good problem solving techniques, validation of information and follow-up.
  • Maintain effective follow-through of assigned responsibilities in a prompt and efficient manner so that no other divisional process is delayed and supervisory intervention is not required.
  • Establish and maintain an atmosphere of trust and honesty always maintaining confidentiality as defined by parties involved.

REQUIREMENTS: Include but not limited to: Current R.N. or higher degree; current ACLS/BCLS certification; previous O.R. management experience, preferably ophthalmic. Must be able to demonstrate leadership and an understanding of the operations of the center. Understanding and experience with Windows software applications.
