Employment Information

Under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Personal Trainer provides leadership and education to members by coaching members on proper exercise, nutrition and healthy lifestyle adaptation resulting in healthier individuals through a quality program for all involved. The personal trainer provides a fee-based service with all fees determined and paid to the YMCA. The Personal Trainer will consistently exhibit behaviors and attitudes that are consistent with the YMCA mission and policies of the Association.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates the participant’s fitness level through a fitness evaluation or assessment.
  • Assists the participant in creating goals that are achievable.
  • Creates a program and makes recommendations that are within the personal trainer’s expertise.
  • Monitors the progress of the member throughout the training program continuously modifying the program to achieve the stated goals.
  • Provides continuous education regarding “risk factor” modification and pre-established goal accomplishments to participants.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality between the personal trainer and member.
  • Ensures that the highest quality of service is provided.
  • Continuous personal education to maintain industry standards and current certification(s).
  • Maintains and cleans equipment according to the schedule or as requested by supervisor .
  • Adheres to the Association operating policies and procedures by operating the programs within the guidelines set forth.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health and welfare of members, program participants, guests and staff; responds to emergency situations in accordance to facility policies and certification requirements.
  • Completes all job related meetings and trainings as required.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the Wellness Director.

PAY SCALE:

This scale is based on Job Title and number of hours trained per pay period. Due to pay calculation, this position is ineligible for a merit increase. Pay rates will be evaluated to market based on business needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have a Personal Trainer certification from one of the accredited national personal training organizations.
  • Knowledge and application of wellness, primarily physical fitness and an understanding of how to set basic fitness goals.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and experience of personal training techniques and practices.
  • Experience with active listening techniques and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from different backgrounds.
  • Represent the YMCA in a positive manner.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job includes, but not limited to:

  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in classes and activities.
  • Ability to verbally and physically communicate program content
  • Ability to hear participant discussion and questions.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including, but not limited to, leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift equipment and perform all physical aspects of the position, including, but not limited to, leading class, walking, standing, bending, lifting, and reaching.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the program environment, including in the classroom and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness, heat and cold.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • Personal Trainer I requires less than 600 hours of previous training experience.
  • Personal Trainer II requires more than 600 hours of previous training experience, or a bachelors/masters degree in Exercise Science or a health-related field.
